It's been a Kurzenknabe week!

Two new hymns by J. H. Kurzenknabe, four new hymnal links, and a new Kurzenknabe bibliography page!

This week I found a book at the Internet Archive called Biography of Gospel Song and Hymn Writers (1914). Looking through the book, I decided to do an update on the John H. Kurzenknabe page on this site. Currently, the "Peoples Pages" contains only the hymns they wrote that are located on this site. On the Kurzenknabe page I added his picture and a short bibliography found in this book. In addition to that, I added links to all the hymnals I have found that he edited along with the hymns on this site. I really hope you like the addition, and will find it useful. I will be doing more of this as time goes on.

In addition to the page update, I have added links to four more hymnals that he edited and printed. They have been added to our hymnal links page, the Kurzenknabe page. Here they are if you want to take a quick look. All of these can be found at the internet archive.

  • Silvery Echoes of Praise and Prayer: a collection of hymns and music, especially adapted for children and youth in the primary and intermediate depar; Date: 1880.
  • Peerless Praise:a collection of hymns and music for the Sabbath school, with a complete department of elementary instruction in the theory and pract; Date:1882
  • Fair As The Morning : hymns and tunes for praise in the Sunday-school;  Date: 1891.
  • Gates Ajar: a collection of hymns and tunes for use in Sunday-schools, praise and prayer meetings, etc.; Date: 1885.

The two new hymns that I have added this week were arranged by John H. Kurzenknabe and are really great hymns.

The first hymn, Ever Near is a simple hymn that encourages us never to be dismayed, because Jesus is near to those that love him. It is uplifting and reassuring of the promises of our Lord.

The second hymn, My Saviour Hath Loved Me, tells us how and why Jesus left heaven and died on the cross, the second verse ask the question of what can we do in return. The hymn closes with the third verse telling us that it is our lives, and service to him that is brought about by his love is what we joyfully give.

O, freely I give them, my Saviour so dear,
My heart, and my hand, and my service are here:
The life Thou has saved, and the love Thou hast given,
Shall serve Thee on earth, and shall praise Thee in Heaven.

These are just beautiful words and show the heart of the true Christian's love for their Lord!

Enjoy!

Ted
